Are you thinking about shopping for a new dental insurance policy for 2024? There are many different plans on the market, and each one comes with its own set of benefits and stipulations. How can you choose the one that is best for your family? This blog post shares some points to keep in mind as you are comparing your options.
There Are Different Kinds of Plans
There are a number of different kinds of dental plans. Some are Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs), while others are Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs). PPO plans allow you to visit virtually any dental practice, though you can enjoy lower out-of-pocket costs if you choose an in-network provider. HMOs, on the other hand, require you to stay within your network. Both types of plans have their advantages, but PPO options tend to be more popular due to their flexibility.
Different Plans Provide Different Coverage
Most dental insurance plans have a strong focus on preventive care, so you can enjoy exams, cleanings, X-rays, and other basic services for little to nothing out of pocket. It is also common for insurance to cover a large portion of the cost of minor restorative services, such as fillings. Certain major services, including crowns and some types of oral surgery, could be about 50% covered.
However, some plans provide more robust coverage than others. For example, some do not cover dental implants at all, while others classify them as a major service. A handful of premium policies cover orthodontia for adults, though many do not.
There May Be a Waiting Period
Some dental plans require a waiting period of 6 – 12 months before you can receive coverage for restorative services. The good news is that if you are switching from a different policy, the waiting period might be waived. However, if you are new to dental insurance, you will very likely be subject to the waiting period.
You May Be Eligible for a Group or ACA Plan
Some employers offer dental coverage to their employees at a reduced rate. It would be worth it to ask if you can get insurance through your place of work. If you cannot, most dental insurance companies offer individual and family plans that are quite affordable.
Also, keep in mind that while you can get dental insurance through the Affordable Care Act’s marketplace starting November 1, you can also purchase a plan at any time throughout the year if you do not use the marketplace.
Shopping for dental insurance can be tricky at times. Use the above tips to help you search for the perfect plan for your needs.
