Do I Really Need My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

An X-ray image of wisdom teeth.

Picture this: you’ve just finished your semi-annual dental exam and cleaning, and your dentist is reviewing your X-rays. Seemingly out of nowhere, you’ve just been informed that you need to get your wisdom teeth removed. Wait, what? They’re not even bothering you, so why do they need to come out? The truth is, even if you don’t notice them or feel any pain, you may still need them extracted. If you’ve been recommended for removal, here are a few reasons your dentist may believe you need them out.

Oral Health Issues

While those tiny back molars may seem like they pose no risk, unfortunately they are notorious for doing just that. Healthy wisdom teeth that erupt fully can cause crowding in your mouth that can cause chaos to your bite and cleaning them can be a major challenge due to their positioning in your mouth.

Additionally, they can also:

  • Damage surrounding teeth
  • Cause cysts
  • Damage your jaw
  • Cause sinus pain or pressure
  • Increase gum inflammation or cause gum disease

Why Remove Them Sooner Than Later

While some of these problems may not be an issue quite yet, your dentist can tell if they will someday become an issue, especially if you exhibit any of the following warning signs:

  • Gum pain or tenderness
  • Crowding
  • Crooked growth

What Happens If I Keep Them?

In some cases, it is perfectly fine to keep your wisdom teeth, however if your dentist is recommending extraction, it is best to do so before there’s a problem. This will save you a lot of pain, money, and frustration in the long run.

Remember, wisdom tooth extraction is a very common procedure and one your dentist will only recommend if it is absolutely necessary. If you have any questions or concerns about the procedure or about the consequences of keeping them, speak to your dentist about your concerns.
